What is Vertical Development?
Vertical development means developing greater capacity as human beings to be in relationship to ourselves and others around us so we can think, feel, and act in better ways that fit different and multiple contexts. Vertical development is different from its sibling, called horizontal development, which includes acquiring a competency or knowledge (e.g., a communication preference or personality type), often from an expert with “the answer.” Vertical development is working on “how we think” as opposed to only “what we think.”
Here is a helpful analogy: Vertical development is like increasing the size of your tea or coffee cup so that your cup can hold a greater volume of delicious brew. In contrast, horizontal development is filling up your existing cup in its original size. Both are valuable, and yet in a fast-paced, ever changing world full of interdependent people and things, horizontal development only is not sufficient; vertical development is also needed.
On what is the Vertical Mindset Indicator based?
The VMI assessment is based on the well-respected Washington University Sentence Stem Completion test (WUSSC), research done with Harvard University, and assessments of 10,000 leaders across nationalities and industries. The VMI builds on the work of Susanne Cook-Greuter, a world authority on leadership maturity. Her leader maturity profile (MAP) has been validated across many cultures and populations. Since 1980, she has analyzed more than 11,000 MAP tests in more than 200 different academic and business contexts.
